March came in like a lion cub, bringing just enough snow for some sledding. The warmer temps expected this may make the Riverside Skating Rink cut back regular hours, call ahead to verify if they will be open (link).

For those who still want to play in the snow, Lake County still has plenty for skiing (link). While there, check out the shelf ice on Lake Michigan. It’s been decades since it was this much.

The sandhill cranes are slowly returning to Jasper Pulaski, there are enough to make the trip to see them (link).

Watch for lowland flooding which may effect the county portions of Wabash Heritage Trail, and trail 3&4 of Prophetstown State Park.

March 5: Wednesdays in the Wild, Lilly Nature Center, 1-3 p.m. Natural Hitory & Conservation of Golden Eagles”. Dr. Jacqueline Doyle from the Purdue Dept. of Forestry & Natural Resources will present research on golden eagles. Much of the research was done in the Mojave Desert. Golden Eagles are typically seen in the west, but on occasion do show up in Indiana.

March 8: Walking Stick Workshop at Prophetstown St. Park. Pre-register with Angie Manuel at the Main Office/Visitor Center. Ph: 765-567-4919, e-mail; amanuel@dnr.in.gov. 5$ program fee. Gate fee of 6$ for instate and 8$ for out of state cars.

March 9: Sycamore Audubon Society will do a Woodcock Display field trip. You can meet at Celery Bog for a caravan to Purdue Wildlife (link) Area on St. Rd. 26 West. You may also just meet there at 6 p.m.

March 8-9: Red River Park at Lake County, Maple Sugar event. Grab your skis or sled to enjoy the snow and watch voyageurs make maple syrup (link).
