Jan. 25: Kankakee Sands Office, 3294 N US 41 Morocco, 5 p.m. social hour, 6 p.m. film (link). Sponsored by The Nature Conservancy (link), the film Everglades of the North will be shown. The Grand Kankakee Marsh is the subject of this film. The GKM was left over after the glaciers and before drained covered hundreds of square miles of northwest Indiana. The Kankakee marsh was drained and the river channelized to facilitate agriculture. Currently sections are being re-established and protected. Kankakee Sands is one of those attempts. Figure about 1.5 hours or so travel time, Morroco is on Chicago time.
Jan. 26: Grapevine Wreath Workshop. Prophetstown State Park Main Office, 1 p.m. Pre-registration is necessary for this workshop (link). $5 supply fee, but no gate fee. Grapevine for this workshop has been harvested from the park. Leave your wreath plain or bring your own additional items to complete the wreath. Register by calling the park, Mon-Fri. 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. or e-mail the naturalist: amanuel@dnr.in.gov .
Hiking conditions:
River is down; low spots in the trail will be icy but passable. Burnett Creek section includes creek crossings, prepare for ice water wading.
