Jan. 20-25: Winter bird feeder count. Attention backyard birders, you can help add to the national database while enjoying a cup of coffee and watching your feeders. Many local bird enthusiasts will be participating. Guidelines for the count are on the Indiana Audubon website (link). If you are unsure of your identification skills, use the next few weeks to hone them so you can take part in the February count.
Jan. 23: Wednesdays in the Wild. Lily Nature Center, 1-3 p.m. Capitol Reef National Park: Utah’s Red Rock Eden (link) is the first of a series of programs featuring the National Park System which will celebrate its centennial in 2016. John MacDonald, Purdue Entomologist (link), will share his experience of stream insects in the Utah park. Using techniques used by Hoosier Riverwatch volunteers to check the water quality of local streams, MacDonald studied Pleasant Creek. Pleasant Creek is a free-flowing stream starting in an Alpine Meadow and ending in a desert.
