Jan. 22: Wednesdays in the Wild, 1-3 p.m. Lilly Nature Center. Grand Canyon: From the River and the Rims is the title of the program. John McDonald, entomologist, will talk about his 230 mile raft trip down the Colorado River. His photos will give the attendee a virtual tour. The geology and ecology of the river will show the changes; seeps, springs, rocks and plants.

Jan. 20-25: Winter bird feeder counts. Help the Indiana Audubon Society count birds (link) for their date base. Get the form (link) and instructions. If you have never participated in a bird count before, you can consult Barney Dunning (765-497-3082 or jdunning@purdue.edu) from the local Sycamore Audubon Society.

Prophetstown State Park: (link) The park is open for free. Outhouses are available, heated bathrooms in the main office, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. While the trails are not groomed, they are very decent for cross country skiing, if we have 6-8” of snow on the ground. Keep in mind, there is a lot of drifting so snow shoes might come in handy for prairie hiking. When the farm is closed, the woodland village trail and the prairie/river view trail are accessed from the main office.

Upcoming: Don’t forget that Jan. 28 is Conservation Day at the Statehouse (link).
