Planes, trains and automobiles, balloons and canal boats, as well as mills and traditional crafts are on deck for the second weekend in the Tippecanoe County area. Destinations on this list are within an hour and half from the city limits.
Sept. 7: Car Show, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Friendship House, 1010 Cumberland Ave., West Lafayette. Family Friendly, free event. This is a fund raiser for Friendship House programs. Owners of hot rods and classic cars will be donating to the House, live music during the lunch hour and an indoor garage sale.
Sept 7: Firehouse Museum, 5 Points, 1-5 p.m. Family friendly, free although donations are gratefully accepted. This is the first firehouse in Lafayette to be designed for a mechanical fire truck, not the 2 story firehouse designed for horse-drawn equipment. Antique fire trucks and models of fire trucks on site.
Sept. 7: Adams Mill, 1-5 p.m. (link) Family friendly, fee charged. Americana items in the mill including horse drawn vehicles, mill is adjacent to a large nature area. Travel time about 30 mins. from Meijer’s.
Sept. 6-9: Grissom Air Museum, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. (link) Family friendly, 5$ person, 6 y/o and under free, family passes available. Expected travel time about 1.5 hours. (Either through Peru or Kokomo)
Sept. 7-8: Bridgeton Mill (link), Oldest mill still grinding grain. Following damage to the water wheel in a flood, the mill converted to electric. Milling Days are this weekend. Traditional craftsmen will be demonstrating their arts. Travel time about 1.5 hours.
Sept. 7-8: Delphi Canal Park. Traditional craftsmen in the pioneer village and the canal boat “Delphi” will be making 2 runs each day (link). Experience older modes of travel with new equipment; rent a pedal surrey, paddle boat or kayak from Noble Bikes (link) to explore the canal. Travel time about 25 mins. From I-65 and Ind. 25.
