Tina Turner turning in her U.S. citizenship

According to Friday’s edition of the Swiss newspaper Zuerichsee-Zeitung, music icon and legend Tina Turner is one step closer to becoming a citizen of Switzerland.

The newspaper reports that the local council has announced its decision to grant the 73 year-old Turner citizenship, but the decision still requires formal approval from state and federal authorities.

Turner was quoted in the Swiss daily newspaper Blick as saying, "I'm very happy in Switzerland and I feel at home here. I could not imagine a better place to live."

Turners’ rep wanted to “clarify her situation,” telling Zuerichsee-Zeitung, “Tina Turner will therefore also give back her U.S. citizenship,”

Turner arrived in Zurich in 1994 with longtime partner Erwin Bach, living in a lake house called Chateau Algonquin.

Born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush, Tenn., Turner went on to become famous as part of the duo Ike and Tina Turner. She split from Ike in the late 1970’s and launched a very successful comeback as a solo artist with her hit album “Private Dancer.”
