On Jan. 27, Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin won 2013 SAG Awards for their roles on “30 Rock,” but the series, now in its last season, lost out to “Modern Family” for Outstanding Performance by a Cast Ensemble. Both Fey and Baldwin were appreciative of their individual wins, especially since Sunday was their last chance to win a Screen Actors Guild Award for “30 Rock.”
Lauded by critics for its style, simplicity and genuine warmth, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which made its debut in 1995, has become one of the industry’s most prized honors. As the only televised awards show to exclusively honor performers, the 2013 SAG Awards presented thirteen awards for acting in film and television in a two-hour show. The live ceremony was relaxed and is often referred to as the "cream filling between the Golden Globes and the Oscars."
Tina Fey competed against Julia Bowen and Sophia Vergara from "Modern Family,” Edie Falco from “Nurse Jackie,” and Betty White from “Hot in Cleveland. Sunday night’s win was Fey’s fifth SAG win. During her acceptance speech, Tina graciously accepted her SAG Award and said, “This is so nice! I share this with everyone else in the cast. I also share this with my sweet friend, Amy Poehler.”
Alec Baldwin won his eight SAG Award on Sunday. He competed against fellow funny men Ty Burrell and Eric Stonestreet from “Modern Family,” Louis C.K. from “Louie,” and Jim Parsons from “The Big Bang Theory.” Upon winning his eighth Actor Award, Baldwin seemed humbled and exclaimed, “This is ridiculous! It’s the end of our show, which is the greatest experience I’ve ever had.”
Although “30 Rock” won the Outstanding TV Comedy Actor and Actress Awards, the biggest comedy prize of the night went to “Modern Family.” The other nominees in Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble Series were “The Big Bang Theory,” “Glee,” “Nurse Jackie,” The Office” and “30 Rock.”
After seven seasons and three Outstanding Comedy Emmys, “30 Rock” takes its final bow on Thursday, Jan. 31. The series finale airs at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.
