Another great boxing event happened tonight October 12, 2013 at The Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was the undefeated welterweight champion Timothy Bradley who is now 31-0 (12 KO's) against Boxing’s future Hall of Famer Juan Manuel Marquez now 55-7-1 (40 KO's). Everyone anticipating on watching this matchup just knew it had something special hovering all around it—especially after both fighters last outing in the square circle.
It seemed this night the younger boxer Bradley decided to lean upon his true boxing skills to get him through the night. He did not go into a phone booth slug out with the older Marquez, because he knew his opponent did not show up to fight that kind of fight. Marquez style of fighting has always been at its best when he counter punches his opponent. Tonight, Bradley did not allow him that chance. The younger boxer known as 'Desert Storm' stuck to his game plan and looked good doing it.
Bradley dictated the pace of the fight and made the older fighter wait on him for the majority of the night. It wasn't until the later rounds that Marquez knew he was behind on the scorecards and needed to do something big to change the outcome. The Bradley team must have taken a page out of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. huge upset against Marguez when they fought a few years ago. It was textbook intelligence from Bradley.
Timothy Bradley won a 12-round split decision over Juan Manuel Marquez and has placed himself at the top of the heap, joining Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Andre Ward as the only three undefeated big fighters in the sport today. Of course we can't leave out Adrien Broner. Even though it seems that Bradley is always the underdog and gets very little love from many boxing fans, he too always find a way to win.
As for one of the greatest Mexican fighters in the sport today, Juan Manuel Marquez can continue to fight, if he chooses to do so. He still looked like the Marquez of old, however Bradley fought the better fight tonight. His plan seemed to cause major problems for Marquez. This was a more complicated fight than Marquez and his team anticipated. They did not have answers for what Bradley displayed in the ring.
The future looks bright for Bradley in the world of boxing. He now has wins over some of boxing very elite; including Manny 'Pacman' Pacquaio and Juan Manuel Marquez. Regardless of whether or not he’s a big draw or a fan favorite; he has become accustom to winning. And only winning is what keeps a good boxer in the mainstream of the sport.
Timothy Bradley can now sit back with his arms folded with all of his championship belts and decide when and who he fights next. Like he quoted earlier tonight—"now is my time."
