The seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate for Virginia fell .4 percent in July to 6.9 percent reducing the number of unemployed workers by 16,500. The timing of the report played an important role in the figures this month.
July’s statistical report is run during the week containing the twelfth of the month. The July report ran during the week of July 12th - 18th. This contained the week when most high school and college students, who were looking for work in May, had ceased looking because they could not find work or were returning to school. Summer furloughs from local plants also occurred from June 28th to July 11th. There were, however, 60 percent more furloughs then last year.
