You can use the Expedition Trail Mate right out of the box just by entering your gender, height, weight, and age for accurate watch function.  By using the pack weight setting you can calculate additional calories burned while wearing a back pack.   You can even set a time or distance goal and be alerted when 50% and 100% of the goal has been completed. This will also allow you to keep track of how much time or distance is left on your walk.

The Trail Mate's accelerometer feature allows you to track your activities but it's only “on” when the chronograph is running.  When setting up your watch it's very important that your arms swing naturally to accurately count your steps.  It will take up to 10 seconds of continuous movement before the watch displays activity data.  The watch stores the 10 most recent activities, which can be seen in 'review' mode.

If you want to make your distance and pace even more accurate, you can calibrate the sensor.  The easiest way is to walk a set distance, and let the watch calculate your stride. If you plan to use the watch for walking and running, we recommend you calibrate twice—once for WALK, once for RUN.   The default distance is 300 feet, which is the length of a football field.  Longer distances make for more accurate calibrations.

I have found the TIMEX Expedition Trail Mate to be an essential companion for any walker or hiker.  So get out there, and enjoy.
