Times Journal article goes viral: Shadrack McGill blasted in world media

State Senator Shadrack McGill, who represents the DeKalb and Jackson County area, was quoted in the January 31, 2012 edition of the Times Journal as saying that not raising a teacher's pay is "a Biblical principle. If you double a teacher's pay scale, you'll attract people who aren't called to teach."

This isn't the first time recently that Alabama State Senator Shadrack McGill has come under fire. He was also quoted in an article on WAAY.com last week as saying that he didn't believe in the separation of church and state, which caused many residents to question whether he was doing the job he was sworn to do; uphold the Constitution.

Now the story has reached the international news website, The Huffington Post, where currently there are almost 3,000 comments.  The article is also being sprinkled across other sites and is starting to generate blog buzz.

Local reaction isn't much more positive than the comments on the Huffington Post.

Loree Brownfield commented on Facebook, "This makes about as much sense as saying if [you] ask a professional of any kind to work for free [you'll] get better quality results... I'll teach them to be humble and one day they' ll freak out when they finally get what their worth and proceed to be a much less effective teacher. Its a travesty already how little school teachers make."

User "Amanda" on the Times Journal website said, "He should go stand in the shoes of any teacher for a day. He represents all that is wrong with our government today...NO FAITH, NO PRIDE, and makes NO INVESTMENT in children's education. Furthermore, I have missed the 'Biblical principle' he speaks of that would go against teachers getting a raise!"

Facebook user, Alex Burt offered a slightly altered opinion. "Actually he might have a point. Many people that are passionate about teaching kids will probably do it even with low pay. Well not probably, it's obvious that many do. I do not agree with him however."

It's likely this much negative attention to Senator McGill and Alabama in general might come back to bite him during the mid-term election in 2014.
