Barolo +1 Friday!!!
Drop by today Friday, September 20, 3:30 - 6:30 to experience Barolo from a quiet monster of a producer, Guido Porro
We'll also have something white/bubbly open to freshen up the palate before the reds
2007 GUIDO PORRO BAROLO "SANTA CATERINA"
$39.99 BTL./$479.88 CASE
Serralunga-based Guido Porro certainly isn't about flashy self-promotion, here is a man who genuinely loves his vines and the results are in the bottle. Insanely valued for being single vineyard Barolo wines, perhaps the main reason is that Guido is rarely bothered with sending samples to the wine critics, they have to find him. Both this offering and the selection below are from two sub plots of the famed Lazzarito Vineyard, one of Serralunga's great Crus. Both are monopole for Guido, with similar limestone-heavy soils, these are Baroli that age very well and are so different in personality.
The Santa Caterina is the epitome of graceful Nebbiolo. Don't be fooled into thinking this is an early quaffer, there is definitely an abundance of "Serralunga Steel" in this wine and my notes referenced a ballerina in a mosh pit when describing it. Mineral, prominent anise, chinato, almost black rose scents. Ripe, lots of mid-palate presence of depth, firm grip and tannic structure in the house, definitely one will age exquisitely. Will easily carry through and develop for at least another decade
2007 GUIDO PORRO BAROLO "LAZZAIRASCO"
$39.99 BTL./$479.88 CASE
Lazzairasco is separated by a dirt road and is in the lower portion of the Lazzarito amphitheater, protected from the winds above. More masculine and powerful than the Santa Caterina, this wine is sort of a Serralunga anti-hero, a well-dressed bad guy yet very likable.
Still very primary in its personality, the energetic character from limestone is very present with lots of mineral and movement. Dark chocolate, black fruits creep in with underlying scents of porcini, asphalt and mint. Lots of depth and virtual mountainous structure. Serious spine and acidity which cuts into the rich texture. At age 6, this certainly has early appeal but no doubt it will smooth out further and gain more complexity over the next 12+ years.
2010 GUIDO PORRO DOLCETTO D'ALBA "VIGNA L'PARI"
$17.99 BTL./$215.88 CASE
There are moments when strong terroir transcends and overrides a particular grape varietal. Here is one such example from the Dolcetto grape, but more importantly, it smells like the great Barolo village of Serralunga D'Alba.
Never straying from its varietal roots in the mouth, the nose reveals dark plum, dusty clay, classic Serralunga steely-eyed mineral and camphor notes. More aromatically expressive as it unfolds in the glass, it entices you to do what nature tells one to do with Dolcetto - drink the damn thing!! Mouth-filling and mouthwatering, the 30 year old vines here assert themselves nicely. Depth and detail of place are present, but also so much Dolcetto salvo and snap-back on the above-the-norm finish. Have this wine with salami, sausage, prosciutto, pasta and a bunch of friends.

An easy drinking Italian white that is aimed to please.
2012 Clavidor Rueda "Cepas Viejas" $10.99
Located in La Seca, in the center of Rueda and strewn with large flat stones left from the last ice age,Bodegas Vidal Soblechero owns 42 hectares of vines, the fruit from most of which is sold to other nearby wineries. The rest is fashioned into high quality, authentic wines, using old vines and only natural yeast. The Cepas Viejas comes from 3 plots of Verdejo and Viura, using vines over 50 years in age and only natural yeast. The wine is 50-50 Viura and Verdejo and it offers lots of texture on the palate, grapefruit notes and a lengthy finish.
2010 Elemental Cellars Pinot Gris $10.99
Steven Westby, the winemaker and partner in Witness Tree winery started Elemental cellars in the early 1990s when he was the assistant winemaker at Witness Tree. His aim was to experiment with other varietals that were not planted at Witness Tree. He began with Melon de Bourgogne and Syrah from great vineyards in the Willamette Valley. Steven could not pass up this great Pinot Gris fruit from the Croft Vineyard. It produces beautiful wine that this both fantastic young but also age-worthy.
2011 Pascal Marthouret, VDP Syrah $12.99
Pascal Marthouret is a former auto mechanic who up until his career change in 2000 had produced wine as a hobby. He now owns 6 hectares of vineyards in the upmost north of the St. Joseph AOC, on the border with Condrieu, and also in the Vin de Pay Collines-Rhodaniennes. This Syrah is fashioned like his St Joseph from old vines just outside the St. Joseph AOC. It is aged in 500 Liter Punchoens for 9 months before bottling and offers spicy black fruit, smokiness and fine tannins on the finish.
2009 San Vincenti, Chianti Classico $14.99
San Vincenti is the product of Roberto Pucci, who devoted his entire resources to renovating this beautiful estate. Perched at almost 1500 feet elevation in the hills of Gaiole, San Vincenti maintains a mere 6 hectares of Sangiovese vines planted at high density. From this material, famed enologist Carlo Ferrini fashions muscular, expressive Chianti which flaunts lavish fruit and minerality. This is old school Chianti Classico.
