Today marks the legal sale of marijuana in the State of Washington. Now there is going to be some problems this first day. Namely not all of the stores are ready to sell. They haven't all met the requirements for the distribution of the pot. Another problem is that not all of the farms that were allowed to grow marijuana have been able to harvest the plants. Thus you are going to have long lines and shortages right off the bat.
Many people were already in line for the first sales yesterday and have camped out all night. Some people have stated that they didn't care if they camped out. They simply know that this is a momentous occasion and they wanted to be first. Some have said they never thought that this would ever happen in their lifetime.
Now, when Washington State does get its act together and everything is running smoothly, they are hoping that their tax revenue will be similar to how Colorado has been since the beginning of this year. Colorado has continually been pulling in somewhere between 3-4 million dollars in tax revenue each month since January 1, 2014.
I think we can look forward in the near future to see other states following in the footsteps of Colorado and Washington. Medical Marijuana is now legal in some 23 states with New York being number 23. Florida just recently voted to allow the sale of medical marijuana starting in January 1, 2015. Yesterday was the first day of discussions in Florida as to how to proceed with the growing and distribution of the marijuana.
Some states are still not in favor of the legalization of marijuana or even medical marijuana. They are afraid of the concept of total legalization and what it might bring. For years the federal government has known about the benefits of medical marijuana but the DEA and the pharmaceutical companies did not want to give an inch.
You must remember it is still illegal where the federal government is concerned but even some high ranking senators and even the President himself have come out in favor of legalization. As for now Washington and Colorado are the two states where it is legal to purchase and consume marijuana. I wonder who will be next, maybe Florida.
