Erick Shat's Bakery Get the goods here, a must eat and browse in Bishop, Ca.  For the most amazing and tasty meals and desserts, let alone the variety of bread, this is the place!   California has the best of the west.  Main street Bishop Ca.  No need to even leave the highway, except to park.   Photo credit:  Clora Teel
Mark the map when traveling highway 395 south  a stop in Bishop, Ca.  without is a must.  Erick Schat's Bakkery  is about half way from Lake Tahoe, Ca. to Death Valley.  Located high in the Eastern Sierra and there won't be a better place to cram the goodies into your growling tummy than here.  The bakery has operated here since the 1930's and it will be hard to decide which bread to eat, and which one to take along for later.
They baked turkey, roasted to perfection is layed with a variety of condiments and cheese or meats.  Sandwiches may be eaten inside or taken to the patio in front of the bakery  for streetside munching.  The breads are baked onsite and taken to the display floor to be gathered by anxious guests.  The slicing is done right in front of the customers, good entertainment while waiting in the cafeteria style line to choose which bread and meat will make your meal.
Desserts will boggle the mind, cookies, rolls, donuts, sweet breads, gelatto in various flavors.  There is no way to experience the place till you get there.  Talking about it makes your mouth water. Photos are not allowed to be taken inside the bakery, but there is no problems with outdoor photos and the town park is just across the street if a picnic is your bag.
The rest of your travel in California can be exciting, but if you don't take some time to visit here one of the best experiences of travel will be missed.   Not to mention the rest of highway 395 and the other small towns with their attractions.   Come join the fun, food and scenery of a lifetime.

I've heard about this place... this CA area is one I've not traveled much, and I plan to change that this winter. I'm not brave enough to do the deserts in the summer! ;-) I'm going to subscribe to your column and start planning my trip. You only accomplish what you plan to accomplish, right?

If I am ever in that area I will make sure to stop by and try out this little restaurant's treasure. Ever since you described it to me, at my T-Mobile store in Roseville, I have been salivating at the chance to stop by and try some of the food.
