Time Magazine announced their Top 10 Video Games of 2009, and only one Wii-exclusive snuck onto the list. Here is their top ten list:
While DJ Hero also saw a Wii release, New Super Mario Bros. Wii is the sole Wii-exclusive on that list. Whether New Super Mario Bros. Wii is the best Wii game released this year is still up for debate: from a critical review standpoint, Metroid Prime Trilogy, The Beatles: Rock Band, Guitar Hero 5 and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 all have a higher average review score than New Super Mario Bros. Wii, though there is no denying the game’s appeal. After all, anyone can pick up and play New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It’s simple enough to pick up and play, but can provide a challenge to seasoned gamers.
That said, The Beatles: Rock Band is noticably absent from that list, especially considering how much play the mainstream media gave it. 9-9-09 was a huge day for fans of The Beatles, as this game and all their remastered CDs were released. Reviews of the game were close to universally positive, and the game received high praise. It really seemed that if any one music game was to make a Top Ten list like this, it would have been The Beatles: Rock Band.
All in all, not a good showing for the Wii on this year’s Time Top Ten Video Games list. Only two games made the list, and only one of these is a Wii exclusive.
