Has the quickly approaching April 15th tax deadline got you down? Need some fun after you send off that check? Well, the fun is in Ocean City, N.J. this weekend. The annual Ocean City Doo Dah Parade, complete with lots of basset hounds, is happening on Saturday, April 12.
What's a Doo Dah, you might ask? No one's quite sure of the exact terminology, but it originally was a spoof on the Rose Parade that began in California back in 1978. Ocean City publicist Mark Soifer thought it would be a good thing to bring the parade here, something silly to distract people at tax time. Then he learned there was a Doo Dah Parade already in the Glassboro area; however, that parade closed in two years and the Ocean City Doo Dah Parade was born.
The Doo Dah Parade is a celebration of humor, ending in the traditional Pieasco. Yes, it has to do with pies. It's really a tribute to the late comedian Soupy Sales. The parade ends at the Music Pier where people sit and laugh in the grandstands until the signal is given. Then they squish shaving cream pies in each other’s faces. This year’s Grand Marshall will be Peter Funt, son of the late great Alan Funt of “Candid Camera” fame.
The parade is led off by the basset hounds of Tri-State Basset Hound Rescue. You haven’t really lived until you’ve seen a couple hundred basset hounds parading down the Boardwalk. If you’re in town on Friday, you can have the pleasure of giggling your head off as the bassets perform in Basset Olympics. But don’t worry. No bassets will be harmed as the high jump bar is set at six inches!
Here’s the fun you will have, where and when:
Friday, April 11, 12 noon, Basset Hound Olympics hosted by Tri-State Basset Hound Rescue. (Ocean City Tabernacle, 6th St. and Asbury Ave.)
Friday, April 11, 7 p.m., Dinner/Pawction to benefit the hounds. Greate Bay Country Club, Somers Point, N.J. This is the only event with an entrance fee. Your $23 donation includes a great dinner and the pleasure of bidding on great basset items!
Saturday, April 13, 12 noon is the Doo Dah Parade! The parade begins at 6th Street and Asbury Ave., moves south to 12th St., turns east towards the boardwalk and then turns north on the boardwalk and ends at the Music Pier where it’s time for Pieasco!
And don’t forget to come back to 6th and Asbury after the parade for the Basset Hound Picnic at 1 p.m. There will be lots of great dogs for adoption, fun basset stuff to buy, food, vendors and more.
So when you get those tax check blues this weekend, head on down to the Ocean City Boardwalk where all the fun has gone to the dogs!
