Moonshiner, Tim Smith always kept a low profile in the back woods of Va. as he made moonshine. His role on the show "Moonshiners", has changed all that. Now Tim can’t go anywhere without being recognized. On “Moonshiners” last season, Tim decided to go legal. He started building a distillery in his yard.
Tim named his legal whiskey, Climax Moonshine, after the town where Tim lives. You can buy his brew in Georgia, South Carolina, West Virginia, Tennessee, Washington D.C., and Maryland. Next year, his whiskey should be available in Kentucky. Apparently, he is not going to sell in his home state for a while. He said that he tried to sell some there, but they tried to arrest him.
Tim doesn’t regret his decision to go legal. In fact, he said that there were several advantages to being legal. He no longer has to hide from the law. His whiskey still never has to move, and he will have consistent production.
According to the Daily Independent, Tim said, “Before I went legal, we had to sell our product. We couldn’t sell the flashy bottle. Our stuff was in plastic milk jugs. My dad always told me that if you put a good product in that jug, then you don’t have to put your name on it.”
Besides making and selling whiskey, Tim is the chief of the volunteer fire department in Climax. He loves NASCAR and he is a veteran. Tim served in the US Army. You will often see Tim wearing the boonie hat he wore during Desert Storm, complete with a POW/MIA pin.
