Tim's Place in Albuquerque is a popular restaurant - for all the right reasons

Tim Harris is a unique individual.

He graduated from Eldorado High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2004 and was elected as Homecoming King by the highest margin in the school’s history.

Voted Student of the Year by the administration, faculty and staff, after high school Tim attended Eastern New Mexico University and lived in the student dorm. Food Service and Office Skills were his field of study and he has worked at a number of local restaurants, developing a real following of loyal customers who appreciate and enjoy his style and friendly attitude.

The thing that really makes Tim such a unique individual is he was born in 1986 with Down syndrome.

His mom and dad helped him open a restaurant in Albuquerque. They employ a general manager, but it was clear from the Today Show segment this morning that Tim runs the show.

Tim’s dad said his expectation was always for his son to have he same experiences as his brothers. “We decided early on that it would be a mistake to treat him differently,” he said.

The restaurant is a huge success and when asked by the reporter what his job was, Tim replied, “I’m in charge of the hugs.”

“Who doesn’t like a hug?” asked a customer.

Tim’s dream is “if you can dream it, you should do it.”

Tim Harris is following his dream.

So far the reader board says that Tim has given 32,941 hugs. As the reporter ended the segment, Tim gave her a big hug. That takes the total to 32,942, and counting.
