Two major additions to the Reason Rally -- a free event at the National Mall in Washington D.C. on March 24, 2012 that is slated to be “the largest gathering of the secular movement in world history” -- have been released today. Australian musician, composer, songwriter, actor, comedian and writer Tim Minchin is scheduled to perform on a grand piano and the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) has joined the list of the Reason Rally's sponsors. Co-presidents of the FFRF, Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor, will also be in attendance. Barker is scheduled to sing and Laurie Gaylor is scheduled to speak. David Silverman, president of American Atheists and Chair of the Reason Rally, comments specifically for this article.
Silverman describes Minchin as “one of those performers who appeals to everyone” and is “extremely pleased” that Minchin has agreed to perform at the Reason Rally. Recently, Minchin's performance of a new song, “Woody Allen Jesus,” was cut from the Jonathan Ross Show because, according to Minchin's website, ITV's director of television demanded that the song not be included in the television airing. Silverman, though, says that “Woody Allen Jesus” is just fine for the Reason Rally.
Silverman, commenting about the Freedom From Religion Foundation appearing and being a sponsor of the Reason Rally, says, “The gang is all here now.” Silverman explains, “The Reason Rally is about the entire movement coming together” and is “happy to have a coalition of the entire movement” working together to make the Reason Rally happen.
Silverman hopes that the Reason Rally will “cause Washington D.C. to take note” of secular individuals in America and regard them as a viable voting block to pay attention to. In addition, Silverman says that the Reason Rally will be “the Woodstock of the secular movement” and a major turning point for the secular movement.
