A shirtless McGraw tweeted a photo of himself March 17 celebrating St. Patrick's Day by flyboarding on crips blue waters. In the snapshot,

Tim is ripped and fitter than ever after he stopped drinking alcohol, began following a low-carb Paleo diet, and started doing CrossFit.

'I Had to Stop Drinking'

McGraw had an epiphany in 2008, when he realized that his drinking not only made him overweight, but was ruining his life.

"I drank a lot from my point of view and I needed to stop," Tim told People. "I felt quitting was something I needed to do. I didn't feel I had any moral high ground with my kids in the long run."

I realized it was time to start taking care of myself. You start thinking about longevity, and you wanna stick around. It was the way I felt, more than anything. It's tough to be at your best when you're not taking care of yourself."

Tim stopped drinking in 2008 and began an intense workout program that includes running, weight-lifting and basketball, and has never looked or felt better. The resulting 40-pound weight loss has given him the body of an athlete.

"To stay fit, I try to keep it consistent as best as I can," says McGraw, who's married to singer Faith Hill. "Part of my routine is getting up in the morning, taking the kids to school and then going to the gym, spending a couple of hours in there."

McGraw also does CrossFit workouts and intense strength-training with martial-arts expert Roger Yuan. "We work with pulleys, bars and do core training, strength and balanced movements to build up the muscles between the ribs and connective tissues," said Yuan, who also trained Daniel Craig to play James Bond. "I have trained a lot of people and many are hard workers. But Tim is another animal. There is no quitting in him."

Paleo Diet Embraced by NBA Stars and Supermodels

To maintain his age-defying physique, the buff 6-foot McGraw follows the low-carb Paleo diet, which emphasizes high-quality animal proteins, healthy fats, vegetables and fruits, and excludes gluten, sugar, dairy, legumes, starches, alcohol and processed foods.

Research suggests the Paleo diet accelerates weight loss, lowers blood pressure, and prevents cancer, diabetes, heart disease, depression, and even Alzheimer's. The Paleo diet is the most popular diet around today, and has a large celebrity following, including NBA superstars Kobe Bryant, Blake Griffin and Ray Allen, supermodel Adriana Lima, and actor Kellan Lutz.

“Clinical trials have shown the Paleo diet is the optimum diet that can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, blood pressure, markers of inflammation, help with weight loss, reduce acne, promote optimum health and athletic performance,” said Professor Loren Cordain, author of The Paleo Diet for Athletes.

Joel Friel, a U.S. Olympic triathlon coach, said the Paleo diet works for athletes because it helps with recovery. “[Paleo offers] better long-term recovery due to greater micronutrient content [than a standard high-starch, high-sugar diet], allowing the athlete to train with a greater stress load,” said Friel, author of the Triathlete's Training Bible.
