Tim Fleming interview: Art Los Angeles Contemporary partners with MOCA TV (Photos)

In this interview, Tim Fleming, the director of Art Los Angeles Contemporary, announces new programming information and enthusiastically discusses some of the fair's many impressive partnerships. Returning to Santa Monica's Barker Hangar, this year's eventful fair will be held from Jan. 24 to Jan. 27, 2013.

L.C. What are some of the most exciting highlights of the programming?

T.F. There is a number of different things that we're doing this year that we have not ever done before.

We have forged a partnership with MOCA TV, which is a new YouTube Channel that MOCA launched - which is great. We have always been trying to figure out how do you work with a museum at an art fair and how do you partner. And this, while very much a part of MOCA, is also a separate entity. So, it's very easy to create this partnership, as we're trying to get more viewers on all of their video spots. They'll be doing some programming in our back tent.

We're [also] working with another wonderful non-profit, the Rema Hort Mann Foundation. We're always trying to find ways to become more than an art fair. It's a real cultural weekend. Part of our mission is to create an experience beyond looking at, learning [about], and buying art. So, [this is] one of the partnerships that we forged. For fifteen years, they have been giving unrestricted grants [of] $10,000 to young artists in New York. It's the very first time that they've done this in Los Angeles. It'll all be happening at the art fair, which should be fun.

L.C. Please describe the Ceci n'est pas partnership.

T.F. We have a wonderful partnership with this project Ceci n'est pas, which is art between France and Los Angeles. It's a cultural exchange basically... to create a number of collaborative efforts between French artists and Los Angeles artists. We've undergone this process of learning a lot more about Paris, and we'll see some really wonderful galleries from Paris coming this year. There is a lot of activity happening.

The French exchange is really about… creating future collaborations and future relationships that we hopefully will start now. So, we're very curious to see what kind of French interest and flavor we have in years to come. [We're] just kind of opening ourselves up to a different marketplace.
