Tight end McCoy developing before our eyes

Saturday's game against Notre Dame put the rest of Southern California's opponents on notice that tight end, Anthony McCoy, has arrived.

McCoy had the game of his career, barreling over Irish defenders as though they were Pee-wee football players.

On Tuesday head coach Pete Carroll talked about Anthony McCoy's game against the Irish and his development on the field.

“You know, the two big bust out plays he had on short yardage, they cut him loose and [they were] real nice calls. Good action to draw them up and got them in behind him. Those are probably the two that were special,” said Carroll of McCoy.

Cutting him loose is a nice way of putting it as McCoy made the most of his opportunities and finished the day with five catches for 153 yards.

“The thing I like to talk about Anthony is he's a good blocker,” said Carroll. “He's a really, really a good blocker and takes a lot of pride in it. He's a good technician. He's tough. He's got an amazing wing span that allows him to really engulf guys.”

It is his size and wingspan that allows McCoy to make such a profound impact on the offense both in the blocking game and, as we saw Saturday, in the receiving game as well.

“And the fact that he takes pride in that just enhances the fact that he can run down the field and look great catching the football, too, you know,” explained Carroll. “So he's a really big weapon for us in a number of ways and we love looking for ways to get him the football.”

In fact, all of the Trojans tight ends possess incredible physical traits, with McCoy, Rhett Ellison and Blake Ayles all measuring 6-foot-5 and weighing at least 250lbs.

Having such prolific size and strength at the tight end position opens even more doors for a Trojans offense that is stacked from head to toe.

One thing is for certain, McCoy sees that the door is open and will continue to plow through it.
