Grammy-nominated vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant, one of the fastest rising stars in the jazz world, returns to Miami on Saturday night for a concert at the Colony Theatre in Miami Beach.

Jazz fans in Miami have eagerly awaited Salvant's return since December, when the 24-year-old basically stole the show when she appeared with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra as part of the "Jazz Roots" series at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.

A Miami native, Salvant, the daughter of a French mother and a Haitian father, began classical piano studies at the age of five and began singing in the Miami Choral Society three years later. Early on, she developed an interest in classical voice and began studying with private instructors and later with Edward Walker, vocal teacher at the University in Miami. She took a year of after high school to move to France, studying both jazz and classical singing while simultaneously earning an undergraduate law degree.

Salvant came to the attention of the jazz world when she won the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition, earning a $20,000 music scholarship and a record deal. But more than that, winning the competition is considered the entry to a successful career in jazz performance.

In 2012, Salvant released WomanChild, her first CD, which was nominated for the 2014 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album.

Although the concert is nearly sold-out, there may be some tickets still available. Call the Colony's box office at (305) 674-1040.
