In the latest Tiger Woods update, we see that the scandal surrounding Tiger hasn’t stopped the golfer from winning awards. Today, it was announced that Tiger had been named the PGA Tour Player of the Year. The award followed two prior honors: Athlete of the Decade and the GWAA 2009 Player of the Year. Throughout the infidelity scandal, the truth remains that it has been a good golfing year for Tiger.
This marks Tiger Woods’ tenth time being named PGA Tour player of the year and the honor was in part due to Tiger’s reconstructive knee surgery, after which he won the tour six times. Tiger had won the award in 1997 and each year from 1999 until 2003. He also won in 2005, 2006, and 2007.
The awards come at a tumultuous time in Tiger’s life and amidst an infidelity scandal. There have been approximately 16 mistresses who’ve come forward stating that they had affairs with Tiger. As a result, Tiger announced he was taking an indefinite leave from golf on December 11, 2009. Ironically, when Tiger entered the golf season this year, there were many who questioned Tiger’s ability to play after undergoing major reconstructive surgery on his knee. Now, golf fans wonder when Tiger will return to the course.
Some, however, find that the awards come at an inappropriate time. While many feel that it is important to separate both Tiger Woods’ private and professional lives, others disagree. Some have expressed discontent regarding Tiger winning awards while in the midst of the scandal. They feel that Tiger’s lack of integrity and honesty overshadows his professional accomplishment.
