Photo Credit: APIn today’s Tiger Woods update we take a quick break from the mistresses and scandal and are focusing n Tiger Woods the athlete. On Thursday, December 17, 2009, Tiger Woods was named the 2009 Player of the Year by the Golf Writers Association of America. The award followed an announcement that Tiger had been named the Athlete of the Decade by the AP.
Thursday’s win marked the 10th in Tiger’s 13 years of playing pro golf that he has won the title. He received a whopping 84% of the votes with Steve Stricker following behind at 10% and Y.E. Yang coming in with 6%. Voting began three days prior to Tiger Woods single vehicle car accident and approximately half of the votes had been in place before the scandal broke out. The last day of voting took place on December 11, 2009. Later that evening, Tiger Woods made the announcement that he would take an indefinite leave from golf and admitted to infidelity.
Tiger’s accomplishments on the course included seven worldwide wins throughout the year and garnering a PGA Tour-best six victories. He came in the top 10 14 times in 17 starts, and won the FedExCup for the second time, all in the year 2009.
There will be a ceremonial awards dinner held in August, Georgia on April 7, 2010 that will honor the winners. It is not yet known whether Tiger will attend the ceremony. However, there is a high chance that the scandal will have blown over by next April.
Tiger Woods has not released a public statement in response to the win, and has remained out of the public since his November 27, 2009 car accident.
