Tiger Woods has been named Athlete of the Decade by members of the Associated Press. The honor comes at a time of great personal scandal and media scrutiny. The award has been met with mixed reaction while some feel that his personal sins and transgressions overshadow his accomplishments on the course.
Others feel that when compared to the past ten years, Woods’ recent scandal is a tiny blip and is not in any way directly linked to his golfing career. As an athlete, Tiger Woods is undoubtedly one of the greatest the nation has seen.
In the past decade, Tiger Woods won 12 of his 14 majors, and scored a whopping total of 54 wins on the PGA tour. Tiger Woods was competing against athletes such as Michael Phelps and Lance Armstrong, said AP Sports Enterprise Editor John Affleck.
The votes were tallied and Tiger Woods was clearly the winner. Tiger Woods had 56 votes followed by Lance Armstrong with 33. Roger Federer had 25 and Michael Phelps came in with 13. Tom Brady had 6 votes and Usain Bolt who came in last. There were approximately 140 people who voted in the Associated Press Athlete of the Decade poll.
John Affleck said that he believed people made an appropriate distinction between Tiger Woods the athlete and Tiger Woods the man.

No matter what the sportswriters say, you cannot name an Athlete of the Decade for a game that is not an athletic event in any stretch of the imagination. An athlete is a person who participates in a Sport not one who participates in a Game. If this were true, then a card player, or bowler or shuffleboard player or one who competes in Lawn Darts, would be considered athletes...which obviously they are not. The only real top athletic of the past decade and probably the greatest ever is Lance Armstrong. He has beaten the best the nations of the world have sent out 7 times in a sporting event that is the most physically demanding ever conceived by man. Considering what we know now of Tiger's last 10 years of bed-leaping, he most certainly deserves the top award for that athletic endeavor & maybe has set a new world record! But Athlete of the Decade?....That award only shames the sportswriters who voted for him, much as Obama's award shamed the Nobel voters.
I can not vote Tiger for this award. He represents the game of golf! He has not only disgraced the game but the family value and tradition that has gone on with this game. Tiger out!
