Tiger Woods main attraction at Frys.com Open

The Frys.com Open gets kicked off this Thursday at CordeValle in San Martin, California. All eyes have to be on Tiger Woods as he continues to struggle coming back from injuries of the body and mind. The golfing world is hoping to see the Tiger of old hanging on to any sliver of hope, but it seems it is time to move on. His most recent professional win came at the Australian Masters in November of 2009.

The field looks solid for the week featuring some big names including Ernie Els, Roco Mediate, Trevor Immelman, Angel Cabrera, and UT Alumni Justin Leonard. The most excited player though has to be Patrick Cantlay (amateur) who will be matched with Tiger Woods and Louis Oosthuizen as part of the 12:10pm tee time. Cantlay’s resume is already stacked with impressive credentials at the ripe old age of 19 including shooting a second round 60 at the Traveler’s Championship earlier this year. He was also the low amateur at the US Open finishing tied for 21st. Shooting rounds of 67, 69, and 71 at the 2010 Gifford Championships (collegiate tournament), which happened to be hosted at CordeValle, bodes well for the youngster.

The track Cantlay is on draws up thoughts of “The Next Tiger Woods,” but that is not fair. Let the kid be himself. He is still probably a couple of years away from turning pro. The excitement can not be ignored though. The tour is looking for that next big name to come along and sweep the fans off their feet. Cantlay has all the talent in the world to be that guy. Only time will tell. He’s the sleeper pick for the Austin Golf Examiner this week.
