The New York Times reported on its Web site Monday night, Dec. 14, 2009, that Galea was found with human growth hormone and Actovegin, a drug extracted from calf's blood, in his bag at the U.S.-Canada border in late September. He was arrested Oct. 15 in Toronto by Canadian police. A doctor who treated Stanford alumni Tiger Woods and other athletes is suspected of providing patients with performance-enhancing drugs, according to the New York Times.

Canadian Doctor Anthony Galea was arrested October 15 in Toronto.

In late September, human growth hormone and the drug Actovegin were found in his medical bag at a US-Canada  border crossing, police said.  Using, selling or importing Actovegin is illegal in the United States.  The drug is used by some athletes to enhance performance.

Galea’s lawyer said that he uses innovative treatments that do not break any laws or andidoping rules. The lawyer,  Brian H. Greenspan, told the Times, “We’re confident that an investigation of Dr. Galea will lead to his total vindication.   Dr. Galea was never engaged in any wrongdoing or any impropriety. Not only does he have a reputation that is impeccable, he is a person at the very top of his profession.”

Galea said Woods’ agents referred him to the golfer after they were concerned about the slow pace of Woods’ recovery after knee surgery in June 2008.   The doctor said he treated Woods at least four times in Woods’ Florida home this year with platelet therapy, the Times is reporting.

Woods’ agent,Mark Steinberg told the Times in an e-mail:  “I would really ask that you guys don’t write this? If Tiger is NOT implicated, and won’t be, let’s please give the kid a break.”

Galea  said the drugs found in his bag when he was arrested at the border were “for my own use.”

Thanks for the great update Ed. It sounds like he should probably be taking a break at that house in Sweden! But there are real problems with the house itself, alas. I wrote about it here:
