This walk of shame is becoming all too familiar. What is it about men in power and their inability to restrain themselves from temptation? Tiger said some key things in his conference today that hopefully will resonate with young men and women who think cheating is a necessary evil of celebrity. “I felt entitled.” He said as he looked down at his carefully prepared speech. “Normal rules didn’t apply. I never thought about who I was hurting. I ran straight through the boundaries that a normal couple should live by.” He continued. But the point is he didn’t feel like he was a part of a normal couple as most people in power, if they are being honest, would agree with.
Family and spirituality are the two things that if held in the proper importance in someone’s life should supply the motivation to be faithful. Because when you cheat you are not only cheating on your spouse. You are cheating on your children, your mother, and anyone else who cares about you. You are letting everyone down that looks up to you. It is hard to believe that if Tiger knew the backlash his actions would receive that he would have continued in his pursuit of instant gratification. He said it best himself when he stated that, “I stopped living by the core values I was taught to believe in.” He never thought he would get caught. No cheater would cheat if they thought they would get caught.
Do you think Elin should leave Tiger? It is hard to say what is right for another person. But for many women who have been cheated on, staying is the choice that they feel has to be made. But perhaps if cheating was less tolerated people would think twice before indulging in extramarital affairs. Consequences have to be steep enough to make someone question whether cheating is really worth it.
The main things that should be taken from this Tiger situation include spirituality and family should be priorities, you hurt way more than just your spouse when you cheat, and all cheaters will eventually get caught.
