Tiffany Leiseth is a substitute teacher in Pennsylania charged with having sex with two of her students and providing them with alcohol. The 26-year-old who worked for the New Brighton School District is specifically charged with "two counts of felony institutional sexual assault and one count of furnishing alcohol to minors after allegedly engaging in sexual activity with two of her students," Web Pro News reports July 10.
Leiseth has worked the past two years at New Brighton School District and worked long-term as a high school English teacher. Authorities were notified after the district's superintendent received two calls about senior male students that had been sexually involved with the teacher. An investigation was launched in May.
Chief Leo McCarthy, of Moon Township Police says this:
"They had a rumor that a school teacher was sending nude photographs of herself to two male students. They followed up on that rumor and they found those students, and they found the nude photographs, and they identified the teacher."
It was discovered that the married Tiffany Leiseth had sent nude photos of herself to two 18-year-old seniors who were in her English class. The young men told police that they were invited to Leiseth's house on separate occasions, offered beer, had sexual relations with her.
Pittsburgh CBS Local reports that class schedules for the two students claiming they were sexually involved with Leiseth showed she was their substitute teacher.
Chief McCarthy says:
"It’s known as institutional sexual assault. It’s a felony of the third degree. This crime came on the books around 2007. It’s designed to give people who are being supervised by others protection."
Defense attorney Mike Deriso disagrees with that statement:
"She was not their teacher at the time, and they were not her students. My client did not pursue those boys. They are adults. They make their own decisions."
As Chief McCarthy goes on to say, a school teacher isn't allowed to have sex with a student. The sexual acts allegedly occurred after the last day of school, but it wasn't before the two men graduated. The superintendent told McCarthy that "'those kids are our students until they walk across that stage and get that diploma.’ Therefore, they were still students, so this law applies."
Investigators say, however, that Tiffany Leiseth cannot be charged with any crime by sending nude photos of herself to the 18-year-olds because at that age, they're considered adults. She's been fired by the school district and faces two felony charges.
