Tiffany Leiseth, a young woman working as a substitute teacher in Pennsylvania, is in trouble for having sex with two of her male students. The 26-year-old woman worked as long-term substitute with the New Brighton Area School District, and she sent nude photos of herself to two of her 18-year-old male students prior to graduation. The students reported to authorities that they had sex with the woman in her home when her husband traveled away on business. Web Pro News reported on this young woman's arrest on July 10.
Police in Moon Township charged Leiseth with two charges of felony institutional assault and one charge of giving alcohol to a minor. Even though both of the male students are 18 years old, they had not graduated from high school yet. That is why police charged the teacher with the crime of institutional assault. Leo McCarthy, the police chief for Moon Township, said the following about the charges against Leiseth, according to WPXI:
"Regardless of your age, whether you’re an adult or not, if you’re a high school student, a teacher cannot have sexual relations with you."
New Brighton School District released their own statement on the case, and their statement revealed that they fired Leiseth. She worked with the school district for two years, and she taught English at that high school for the past year. The school first learned of male students receiving nude photos from a teacher, and the school superintendent went to the police about the matter. Police began an investigation at the end of the May, and they found the male students in question. Those students shared the nude photos they received. Police identified Leiseth because of the photos.
The press contacted Leiseth's attorney for this criminal case, but the attorney did not respond to requests for a statement. However, parents of students that attend the high school involved in the case are speaking out. Howard Yellock spoke to Channel 11 about the case, and he said the following:
"Set the example for any other teachers or administrators that have any thoughts of doing anything like that. You’re going to be brought up on charges and prosecuted."
This is not the only case of a teacher having sex with students making news this week. Circuit Judge Marlene Alva sentenced a male teacher from Lyman High School in Florida to 12 years in prison for having sex with two of his female students at his home. The female students were 15-years-old and 17-years-old at the time of the encounters. Police also found child pornography on the computer of Scott Kimbrough. One of his female victims tried to encourage the judge in this case to impose an even tougher sentence on the man when she spoke at the hearing held Monday. The man did not say anything during the hearing.
It is not known what will happen next to Tiffany Leiseth. She lost her job, and she is facing three criminal charges for her actions. A teacher crossing the line with their students in this manner is not uncommon, but it clear that it should not happen at all.
