Ticking clock on 'Imressionism' and 'Book of Mormon' warrants a trip to Chicago

When two extraordinary shows are in your own city, arguably the best getaway is to plan a trip downtown before it’s too late. Such is the case for “Impressionism, Fashion and Modernity” at the Art Institute of Chicago and “The Book of Mormon” at the Bank of America Theatre just west of the Art Institute.

The art exhibit, a mega showing of works from Paris’ Musée d’Orsay, NYC’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, Chicago’s Art Institute and a few other institutions, is only up through Sept. 29, 2013.

Mormon,” the reworked, better version of an already Tony winning musical that opened in Chicago, is closing Oct. 6.

If “Mormon” tickets are available this weekend, best plan is to stay downtown and catch them both because the Bank of America Theatre is on Monroe Street west of State Street and the Art Institute spreads from Monroe to Jackson Streets on Michigan Avenue.

Move the experience up a notch by booking a room at historic Hotel Burnham at State and Washington Streets.

Don’t be among folks who say oops. Chicago is the last stop for the “Impressionism” show and tickets for “Mormon” if you are able to snag a pair elsewhere, likely won’t have Chicago’s great cast.
