In honor of the Tibi pop-up shop at South Miami’s Jenna White boutique (starting tomorrow), I interviewed Tibi’s Founder and Designer, Amy Smilovic, to discuss the brand, Fall 2013, social media and the future. Amy Smilovic founded the exceptional high-end Contemporary apparel and accessories brand in Hong Kong in 1997 to deliver a versatile wardrobe of essential and aspirational womenswear. The clean and relaxed looks make women feel and look both confident and polished and the collections are always made with some elements of femininity. Today Tibi can be found in nearly every country across the globe.
Her inspiration for the strong collections can come to her from just about any source– photography, paintings, old films... it is travel, however, that is usually the winner. Fall 2013 is a collection filled with leather separates, sheer designs and attention-commanding cobalt blue. The collection is “a take on utilitarian values,” the designer explained. She managed to expertly merge the strict practicality of utilitarianism with pure aesthetics. Fall 2013 is filled with chic, functional elements such as layers, sweaters with removable dickies and jackets with removable vests all in rich materials like quilted silks, washed satins and textured Italian neoprene fabrics. This is a striking and memorable collection certainly fulfilling the brand’s drive to create clothing that looks just as amazing on women at work as they look on the street.
Smilovic chose Jenna White as the exclusive location for the pop-up shop due to her longtime relationship with Jenna White and the boutique owner’s true understanding of the brand. “Jenna has a really loyal following at her store and they love Tibi so I’m really excited to be able to give them a Tibi-dedicated store for one week,” the designer enthused. It seems that Amy’s always keeping the brand’s loyal devotees in mind. She explains how social media allows for the company to have immediate feedback on customer reactions to designs from the brand. It’s a dialogue Smilovic describes as intimate, informal, friendly and truly invaluable.
When asked what we can expect from her next, Amy explained that though not realistic, she would love to “press the pause button and keep everything the way it is.” She has two sons her world revolves around and she’s lucky enough to work with her husband every day. Life is constantly changing and pushing things forward but Smilovic finds happiness in creating “beautiful things that really speak to women.” As long as she can continue with her mission, she’ll be pleased.
The Tibi pop-up shop at Jenna White boutique will run for six days – October 7th to October 12th with a special appearance by Designer Amy Smilovic herself on both Monday and Tuesday. Tibi brand pieces from the Fall and Holiday 2013 collections will be in store for great shopping along with champagne and other fun treats. Shoppers who spend $650 or greater on Tibi merchandise during the event will be able to choose from one of two beautiful lace tops as a stunning gift with purchase (pictured in slideshow).
