Tensions in Tibet remain high. And a recent move by the Chinese government to detain Tibetans returning from India implies there is no end in sight to the troubles between the Tibetans and the Chinese government. The Times of India has reported "China detaining Tibetans returning from India: Human Rights Watch."
It has been reported that the Chinese government has detained several hundred Tibetans who returned to Tibet from India after attending teaching sessions which were overseen by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The detained Tibetans are being forced to undergo political re-education according to Human Rights Watch. It appears this is the first time since the late 1970s that the Chinese authorities have detained Tibetans in such large numbers.
About 7,000 Tibetans were allowed by China to attend sessions with the exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, in Bihar, India recently. It was hoped by Tibetans that this represented a relaxation of policy towards Tibet by China. However, that all changed dramatically with increased unrest in the eastern Tibet areas and fears by China that might spread to Lhasa. And so at this time Tibet remains a tragically disturbed region.
