The unrest in Ukraine is rooted in tensions between the country's industrialized Russian-speaking east and its nationalist western region, and complexities in Ukraine's relationship with Russia since gaining independence in 1991.

On Thursday, March 13 at 7 p.m., international security expert Rudy L. Hightower will provide insights on the current Ukraine crisis, along with pictures from his recent trip, at the Bexley Public Library, 2411 E. Main Street in Bexley.

As a Ph.D. candidate in the John Glenn School of Public Affairs at The Ohio State University, Hightower has a deep understanding of the Black Sea region.

The OSU Mershon Center funded Hightower's trip to Ukraine to research his case study "The Declarations of Independence: The Pridnestrovian Moldovian Republic," which was published by the Center for Complex Operations / Naval Postgraduate School. He also taught the case study at Ohio State in the course Public Policy 670 as the basis for a filmed student debate.
