At least 32 homeless and formerly homeless people died in central Ohio during the past year. To celebrate their lives and raise public awareness, the Columbus Coalition for the Homeless is sponsoring an interfaith candlelight memorial service from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 19 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 125 E. Broad Street in downtown Columbus.
Dr. Laura Stivers, author of Disrupting Homelessness: Alternative Christian Approaches, will be the keynote speaker. The service will include a reading of the names of those who have died, lighting of candles in their memory, and ringing of the steeple bell. The Ridgeview Middle School Choir will perform.
Dr. Stivers will share highlights from her book, examining our unexamined ideologies about homelessness, and how faith communities can address homelessness in ways that promote hospitality and justice.
Earlier in the day, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., the workshop "From Charity to Community: Addressing Homelessness" will be held at the First Unitarian Universalist Church, 93 West Weisheimer Road in Clintonville.
