Thunderbirds dominate Canada West swimming championships

According to the University of Calgary Dinos website on Sunday, the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds won the men's and women's overall competitions at the 2014 Canada West Swimming Championship at the University of Calgary Aquatic Centre.

The Thunderbirds generated a total of 1071 points from the women's competitions to beat the University of Calgary Dinos by 497 points and a total of 941 points from the men's competitions to beat the Dinos by 186 points. The 1071 points the Thunderbirds got from the women's competitions were a Canada West record.

Coleman Allen of Spokane, Washington set three Canada West records. He posted a record time of 23.91 seconds in the men's 50m butterfly, 52.08 seconds in the men's 100m butterfly and 1:57.59 in the men's 200m butterfly.

Allen, Jonanthan Brown of Calgary, Justin Chan of Vancouver, British Columbia and Stefan Milosevic of Burnaby, British Columbia also set a Canada West record in the men's 4x200m freestyle relay with a time of 7:16.88, that was also matched by the Dinos foursome of Bogdan Knezevic of Toronto, Ontario, Reid Scarrow of Oakville, Ontario, Russell Wood and David Woodman of Calgary.

Wood also set a Canada West record in the men's 200m backstroke with a time of 1:56.08.

The 2014 Canadian Interuniversity Sport National Swimming Championships will take place in Toronto from February 20-22.
