Thunder win 2013 Mac's Midget Hockey Championship

According to www.macstournament.ab.ca, the Edmonton Thunder defeated the Saskatoon Stars 3-1 Tuesday afternoon to win the female division of the 2013 Mac's Midget Hockey Tournament at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary.

After a scoreless opening twenty minutes, the Thunder went on the offensive attack with a goal by eventual game most valuable player Alexandra Poznikoff.

Poznikoff then set up Morgan Casson with the game winning goal just over two minutes later before Elizabeth Salyn scored shorthanded to put the Thunder up 3-0.

The Stars responded with a third period goal, but it was too little, too late. Goaltender Chloe Sanderson, who had sparkled in the tournament, made 24 saves on 25 attempts.

A major reason for the Edmonton Thunder's tournament victory was their outstanding defensive play. In six tournament games, the club only allowed six goals. Before the Stars scored their third period goal, Sanderson had not allowed a goal in over nine periods of work.
