Baltimore-based band Thrushes play tonight, January 30, 2010, with Vincent Black Shadow at Sonar's Aural States Fest II. Thrushes is what Baltimore is all about - laid-back and dark. One could not choose a better band to represent this city. Anna Conner sounds as if she were the love-child of Joan Jett and Patty Smith. The guitars are dreamy and distorted, and go perfect with Conner's voice, unpretentious and complimentary.
Anna Conner's voice is strong and confident, even over the sleepy and smokey background music. When Thrushes gets quiet, one can hear a Explosions in the Sky or Red Sparrowes influence. The band issued one album, "Sun Come Undone", and are at work creating another, entitled "Night Falls", according to the band's website, to be released March 9, 2010.
Thrushes is so easy to listen to, that you often forget you are listening to it. At the same time, they are so good, you want to hear every little echoed guitar and splashing cymbal. If you have to choose what show to attend, and Thrushes is on the list, it should be a no-brainer, go see one of Baltimore's best Indie bands today, and you'll have the opportunity tonight at Sonar.
