A lot of attention is being drawn to a new, mainstream scientific study that supports the notion that our universe is similar to a large computer simulation, and is, more importantly, the product of a Creator. The title of the study, Constraints on the Universe as a Numerical Simulation, was published late last year in arXiv by Silas Beane, a physicist at the University of Bonn, Germany. This study also explains scientifically that the energy level of cosmic rays obey the laws of the universe in which we life. The existence of this three-dimensional construct would prove intelligent design by a conscious Creator who originally built the universe. This is pretty controversial stuff coming from a realm of study that denies the existence of God.
Many people, in response to the article, would ask ‘do we really live in one true reality, or in one of many simulations?’ It's a theme explored in the 1999 science fiction classic, The Matrix, as well as other popular entertainment over the past two decades. The idea of living in an artificially-constructed environment came to public awareness with the concept of virtual reality over twenty years ago. Taken even further, is it possible that the world around us is in many ways similar to virtual reality, and that we as human beings go on living once we leave it? Examining creation around us, we quickly learn that the universe is digital, not analog. It can even be said that we are digitized physical beings that possess a non-material consciousness that transcends our physical simulation. Simply put, we are spiritual beings that possess a soul and live in a body.
Whatever you believe about the origin of the universe, whether you believe in the so-called ‘big bang’ or not, or whether you would have chosen the red or blue pill, the bottom line of this scientific study is that a conscious Creator originally built the universe. Scientifically speaking, if our universe is an intricately-crafted simulation, then by definition, it must serve some ultimate purpose. The next question to be logically asked is who is He who built this simulation? Who is God, our Creator? He is obviously an intelligent consciousness who is omnipotent, having unlimited power, and omniscient, understanding all things. It’s sequential to believe that He has a plan for us, and created us in His very image. Our DNA bears his fingerprint. He created all that we see, and can’t see. Every subatomic particle in the universe testifies to it, down to the very air we breath.
We each exist in the construct that He designed. Once we die in the simulation, our consciousness leaves and is transported to a place even more real. This is why people who have survived near-death experiences often share memories of a reality much more intense than physical life on earth. Despite the instability of the times in which we live, many people are embracing the fact that our existence, and the universe around us, is best explained as it relates to the design of a powerful Creator. God is powerful enough to use science to move people towards Him. Ultimately, scientific facts and realizations alone will not change anyone’s heart. It’s the divine love of God, and His Spirit, that draw people to Him. .
If we are, in fact, living in a temporary simulation, a controlled environment, it would stand to reason that we should live differently. Living with a purpose that would transcend this realm is our best option (Hebrews 12:2). We must live realizing that the pursuit of material things is useless, and that our actions are being watched and recorded. There will be everlasting consequences for the decisions we make here and now. What also matters more than the quantity of our days, which are fleeting, is the knowledge that our souls are eternal. Once this temporary life is finished, and the ‘test’ is complete, we move on to a place far more real. We will either live forever with our Creator, or eternally apart from him. This truth will be revealed to those of us who seek to know Him and His word, as revealed in the Holy Scriptures. The study of the universe around us confirms God’s infinite power and wisdom, and all things were created through Jesus Christ (John 1:3). He was God’s creative agent, and is salvation for those who trust Him. The questions that we ask about the universe in this life regarding intelligent design is because God has wired us this way, and has set eternity in the hearts of men (Ecclesiastes 3:11).
