Thrifty TV show Extreme Couponing premieres 12/29 on TLC

Would you dumpster dive for coupons?  Do you need entire rooms of your house devoted to your freebie stockpile?  Could you stop grocery shopping for a year and still be able to feed your family?  If you can answer yes to any of these questions, you could qualify as an extreme couponer -- and you'll find some like-minded thrifty souls on TV tonight, with the premiere of Extreme Couponing on TLC.

TLC launches its new Extreme Couponing series on Wednesday, April 6th.  Read more here.

TLC's new special Extreme Couponing follows four die-hard couponers who revel in the glory of a good score, and turn up their nose at the thought of paying full price, for, well, anything.  Online couponers will be most familiar with Joanie Demer, who runs the Krazy Coupon Lady website online.  Other participants include Nathan, who brings TLC cameras along on a 2,000-item grocery haul, and Joyce, who claims she hasn't paid for a stick of deodorant or a tube of toothpaste in more than 30 years.

Early reaction online has been skeptical, with many critics comparing some of the extreme couponing techniques discussed as akin to a hoarding or an obsessive-compulsive disorder.  But with saving money sitting at the top of many Americans' New Year's resolutions, it's hard to dismiss any ideas, no matter how unfamiliar, that might put a few extra dollars back in someone's pocket.

UPDATE: TLC announced on January 6th that Extreme Couponing would be revamped into a spring series, with 12 episodes slated to air.  Read more about the TLC Extreme Couponing series announcement.

Your turn

What do you think?  Are you a faithful couponer who's open to creative ways to saving more of your household budget, or does couponing at all seem like more effort than it's worth?  Check out the video to the left for an example of a typical Krazy Coupon Lady shopping trip, and share your thoughts in the comments section below.

I think that this show will be fascinating, but I do agree. There is a fine line between saving money and providing for your family and obsessive compulsive disorder.

This show is Ridiculous........I am a "Coupon Clipper" myself, however, I do not Hoard useful Necessities in my house. There are people in this world that Need these items,,,,,, that are stacked on your house..... that you will not possibly use all of anytime soon. It is Heartbreaking and Sad to see people on the show have the knowledge, time, physical ability, and resources to get these useful items and the only thing they do with them is "Get excited to see them in their house." Nathan was the only person that even mentioned donating any of the items, as well as, if he was going to buy a lot of one item call ahead to the store. It is people like you, that when I get to the store, there is nothing left on the shelf. Think of someone other than Yourself.

Thanks for the comment -- I saw a lot of people online chatting about the show tonight who were disappointed that there wasn't more mention of couponing for charities. I'm always impressed by how generous many couponers really are!

I think desperate times calls for creative budgeting. One person's hoarding may be another person's only way to successfully feed his/her family.

That is true about feeding your family, however, you can not feed a family with 50 laundry deterdents, 300 tooth brushes, hundrends of hand soap etc. Even with the food, who can each 150 candy bars, hundrends of boxes of noodles, etc. before they go bad. There is a BIG difference between being plain greedy and successfully feeding your family for cheap.
