Brownies are a universal favorite treat among chocolate lovers at any time of the year. Why not save money by making your own brownie mix with just a few simple ingredients? Skip the store-bought boxed brownie mixes, which are often filled with chemical preservatives.

While you’re at it, you might even measure out a few extra brownie mixes to give as gifts for your favorite baking enthusiasts.

Be sure to read the brownie recipe at the end. You will likely want to include a copy of the instructions, if you pass along your homemade brownie mix as a gift.

First, gather the ingredients to make Homemade Brownie Mix

  • 2 1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 2/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (unsifted)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Next, follow these easy instructions to create Homemade Brownie Mix.

Carefully measure each ingredient into a one-quart canning jar, lidded glass canister, or your choice of containers. Layer components carefully for the most appealing effect.

Close the container tightly to keep the Homemade Brownie Mix sealed and secure for longer shelf life.

Here’s how to bake a batch of brownies, using Homemade Brownie Mix.

Preheat an oven to 350 (f) degrees. Reduce the heat to 325 (F) degrees, if you are using a glass baking pan.

Lightly grease a 9” x 12” baking pan.

Combine these ingredients in a large bowl:

  • 1 jar Homemade Brownie Mix
  • 3/4 cup butter or margarine (softened, but not melted)
  • 4 eggs

Stir the brownie batter well before pouring it into the prepared pan. Bake brownies for approximately 30 minutes. Cool completely in pan before cutting into squares for serving.

Dust brownies with sprinkled powdered sugar, or frost them, if desired.
