Three-year-old dead after mistaking pink handgun for toy

A toddler from South Carolina is dead after he was playing with a pink handgun. The child thought the gun was a toy and began playing with it, according to police.

When police arrived at Haywood Plantation Apartments in Greenville, S.C. on Friday, they “found 3-year-old Temorej Smith dead from a single gunshot wound to the head.”

The little boy and his 7-year-old sister were playing with the pink handgun in a bedroom.

“Smith lived in the apartment with his parents, grandparents and sister. The parents were not home at the time of the shooting, the county's deputy coroner Jeff Fowler told Greenville Online. The shooting has been ruled an accident. No charges have been filed yet, but the investigation is ongoing.”

Johnathan Bragg of the Greenville Police Department advises gun owners to store their firearms in a lock box or keep them out of the reach of children.
