Three ways to leverage a career fair into a career

Phoenicians have great opportunities to attend local career fairs with employers looking for talent during the summer. Preparing for an event should be a process, not a last minute rush or ‘wing it’ situation. Here are some quick tips to help you make the preparation for career fairs less stressful.

  1. Use your computer wisely for help finding a career. Research what companies will be attending and what positions they are hiring for. Create tailored resumes for the companies that you want to be sure to meet with.
  2. Figure out what else will be going on at the event. Career skills workshops can provide needed advice to navigate through the interview process. There are many venues and topics depending on what information you want to learn more about.
  3. When selecting workshops at career fairs - be strategic. What organization is sponsoring the event? Is the content relevant to my industry? What are the credentials of the presenter? Does the sponsor have more than one workshop topic? Are there multiple times the same workshop is offered?

Planning for a career fair will separate you from the competition. Positioning yourself as a candidate that understands the value you can provide an employer will be impactful. The next postings will focus on how you can present yourself in the best ways to a prospective employer. In the meantime, practice these skills on Wednesday, June 23:
