According to a recent Cup of Excellence press release, three US specialty coffee roasters, Sweet Maria’s of Oakland, CA, Tony’s Coffees & Teas of Bellingham, WA, and Ritual Coffee Roasters of San Francisco, CA, made this year’s El Salvador Cup of Excellence auction even more memorable. The auction ended midday of June 4, 2009 with the unexpected announcement that the three roasters, winners of Lot 13, would donate the projected profit of the sale of that coffee to Ricardo Espitia, Executive Director of The Consejo Salvadoreño de Café, to assist in his recovery from a stroke suffered in January of this year.
"We are the Cup of Excellence global family and these three companies show why that name is so fitting."
Susie Spindler, a co-creator of the Cup of Excellence program and Executive Director of the Alliance for Coffee Excellence, Inc.
In appreciation for the hard work and contributions made by Mr. Espitia to improve and promote the coffee of El Salvador, Tom Owen (Sweet Maria’s) came up with the idea, and was gratified to find Wendy De Jong (Tony's Coffee) and Ryan Brown (Ritual Coffee) enthusiastic in their support.
This year’s El Salvador Cup of Excellence auction was a great success, with the first place coffee setting a new record, selling for $22.25 a pound, breaking last year’s record by an increase of $2.15/lb. While records come and go, it will be the generosity of Sweet Maria’s, Tony’s Coffees & Teas, and Ritual Coffee Roasters that will be remembered, as they demonstrated the compassion and spirit of those whose love for the specialty coffee industry extends far beyond monetary profit.
