The New York Daily News reported on Monday that anchor Savannah Guthrie, 42, celebrated her last day on the ‘Today’ show before starting her maternity leave. The morning show threw her a baby shower where there were surprises, advice from celebrity mothers, and unexpected telephone calls from her mother and husband.
Savannah was honored to receive advice and well wishes from three United States First Ladies: Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Laura Bush. Jenna Bush Hager, a special correspondent for NBC's "Today" show and Jenna Wolfe, correspondent for NBC's "Today," who are new mothers themselves also gave Savannah some baby advice. Celebrity women included Tina Fey, Viola Davis, Heidi Klum, Wanda Sykes, and Julia Roberts.
The morning show anchor is excited about welcoming her first baby with husband Mike Feldman. He said he was also eagerly anticipating the days ahead. He added, "Her maternity leave is my paternity gain. We're looking forward to sleeping in to like 4 a.m."
The entire first part of the show was devoted to Savannah and things relating to her baby. They discussed baby names, but Savannah didn't give any clues to the names they are thinking about for a boy and a girl because she insisted they really don't know what they are having. Her mother said she doesn't care whether it will be a girl or boy.
"Today" viewers weighed in online and 54 percent thought she will give birth to a boy, while 46 percent said it would be a girl. The crowd on the plaza also took part in the fun, holding up blue or pink paddles, and it turned out to be a split decision.
A video was shown featuring the nine months of Savannah's pregnancy. Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford also made a special appearance just before the 9 a.m. hour to deliver a carriage full of baby gifts for the expecting mother. A couple of bottles of wine were included.
At the end of the show, all the co-hosts gathered together and gave a toast as they drank from sippy cups.
The Huffington Post reported that Savannah tweeted this morning before going to work, "My last @todayshow before maternity leave! Next time I wake up at 3am it won't be my alarm, or @Studio1ADon calling - it will be baby!"
We will be on baby watch because Savannah is due in a few days.
