She's taught the likes of Phylicia Rashad, Debbie Allen, Taraji P. Henson, Isaiah Washington, Lynn Whitfield, Tracie Thoms, and Anthony Anderson. She is truly a master teacher.
Her name is Vera J. Katz.
I recently had the honor of attending Katz' outstanding audition workshop at Performing Arts Training Studio. Here's three lessons she shared.
1. Take a moment before
Actors typically forget that their first line in an audition is in response to something that was said or happened before the monologue starts.
2. Move with a new beat
Many actors get stuck in what I call a spechifying mode. They stand captive in one spot and give a speech, not a performance. It's good to punctuate beats with movement and gestures.
3. Agents and directors Know after three beats
Time is money, and agents and directors must know quickly if you can cut the mustard. Those first three beats must be believeable!
