Cal Women’s volleyball team opened their season with the Cal Molten Tournament featuring New Mexico State, Nevada, UC-Santa Barbara, and Cal this weekend at Haas Pavilion.
Cal (2-0) won their opening match 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-19) against New Mexico State Saturday and playing on the adjacent court, UC Santa Barbara defeated Nevada 3-2 (25-16, 25-18, 25-19).
“We probably spent more time this preseason with boring passing drills and not as much fun stuff, and it’s paying off,” Cal coach Rich Feller said.
The 2012 NCAA Tournament-qualifying Cal team returns four starters, seniors Adrienne Gehan, setter Joan Caloiaro, junior Christina Higgins and sophomore Mary McKennon.
Gehan has been named to the Preseason All-Pac-12 Team.
Of the six incoming freshmen, three were included as the Top-50 Prep-volleyball ranked players by Volleyball Magazine.
Senior Joan Caloiaro, a transfer from USF and Archbishop Mitty HS grad, played in 116 of a possible 118 sets in 2012 and was ranked fourth in the PAC-12 with 10.4 assists/set.
Coach Rich Feller needs just 18 wins to become only the 15th active coach to reach 600 wins for his career. In 28 years of coaching, 15 at Cal, Feller has amassed a record of 582-320.
In 2012, Cal qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the 11th consecutive season. Shannon Hawari was named to the All-Pac-12 team after finishing third in the conference in hitting percentage and ninth in blocks.
Kat Brown finished her Cal career as the all-time leading blocker with 509.
The Bears will play in the Bluejay Invitational at Creighton University next Saturday and Sunday.
