Visitors do not have to look far to find some great state and national parks in the Knoxville area. Each of the ones on this list are perfect for a one-tank trip. Pack a picnic lunch, pack the kids and car and hit the road. Visiting state and national parks can make the ideal weekend or vacation getaway.
Norris Dam State Park is just north of Knoxville near Lake City. Take I-75 North and exit 122 (Clinton). If you are traveling from Knoxville, turn right and follow the signs.
This is the home of Norris Dam by TVA. There is an observation area, visitor center and small picnic. Signs point the way to other points in the state park. A camping area, picnic area and trails are just a taste of what visitors can expect to find.
Big Ridge State Park is also accessible from the above exit. Don't try to do both parks in the same day. This one is near Maynardville and there are too many recreation opportunities at each to be able to do justice to both parks.
Developing this one was a joint effort between TVA, the National Park Service and the Civilian Conservation Corps. Fishing, camping, swimming, hiking are just a few of the recreation opportunities. A grist mill and remnants of a fort help Big Ridge a popular park.
Indian Mountain State Park is in Jelico. Take I-75 to exit 160 and follow the signs. This park is an example of all that reclaimed strip-mining land can be. It is a peaceful, level park that is surrounded by tall mountains. The park is popular for swimming, hiking, fishing, boating and more. Pedal boat rentals are available. Contact the park to learn more.
