Three Section II teams advance to state tournament

Three out of five Capital District girls’ (Section II, Capital Region) basketball teams advanced to the New York State Public High School Athletic Tournament with victories in regional competition Saturday.
Hoosic Valley, (Class C), Tamarac (Class B) and Fort Edward (Class D) were all victorious, while Shenendehowa (Class AA) and Averill Park (Class A) suffered defeats.
The most exciting game of the day was at Hudson Valley Community College where Cicero-North Syracuse (Section III) knocked off Shenenendehowa in a thrilling 54-53 victory.
The Northstars will be making their fourth consecutive trip to the final four.
While Shen trailed by 12 points going into the third quarter, reserve guard Erin Hulbert, a five-foot junior, sparked the Plainsmen with three steals that all resulted in baskets, three assists and three points to pull Shen within two points entering the final period.
“She’s been a spark off the bench for all year,” Shen coach Joe Murphy said. “She got us going. She has great energy, and knows how to pick and choose where the ball needs to go.”
A dramatic finish ensued.
Shen sophomore Carly Boland (20 points) calmy hit two free-throws to put the Plainsmen up by one point with just 10 seconds left on the clock.
The Northstars’ Mikayla Roberts got the inbounded the ball, whipped a pass underneath to Elizabeth Miles who scored with 1.8 seconds remaining to end the Plainsmen’s season.
In Class A, Averill Park was denied its fourth final four appearance in five years as Jamesville-Dewitt (Section III) came away with a 56-53 victory at Onondaga Community College.
Alyssa Robens and Carly O’Hearn combined for 35 points to lead Jamesville Dewitt (21-2).
The Warriors kept it close trailing 19-15 after the first quarter, 33-30 at the half and 47-40 entering the final quarter. Jamesville Dewitt held on to the victory.
Kelly Donnelly led Averill Park with 11 points.
In Class B, Tamarac cruised to a win with a 61-52 victory over Saranac (Section VII) in Plattsburg.
After falling behind 17-16 in the opening quarter, the Bengals (22-2) outscored Saranac 17-11 to take a 33-28 halftime lead and never trailed again.
Jenna Erickson led Tamarac with 23 points.
Hoosic Valley has its eyes set on a third-straight Class C State title after knocking off Northern Adirondack 39-27 at HVCC.
Laura McGreevy drained four 3-pointers and led the Indians with 14 points. She also had six steals. Lauren Madigan chipped in with 13 points.
“At half, we were much more worried about our defense,’’ McGreevy said. “Once we picked it up defensively, our offense started to come alive.”
Fort Edward just got by Heuvelton (Section X) 46-45 in Canton.
The Flying Forts held just a one-point lead with 15 seconds remaining in the game. Heuvelton had one last shot but missed. Kali Knapp came away with the ball to seal the victory for Fort Edward (21-2).
All State Tournament games will be played at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy beginning Friday.
